Myofascial trigger points/tender points within the soft tissues of the body are often the result of hyperactive muscle fibers. These small areas, where muscle fibers go into spasm, create pain in predictable patterns (see examples below). Trigger points in the neck can cause headaches and in the gluts can cause leg pain, mimicking sciatica. Trigger points can also cause local pain, in the area the tender point is found.
Dry needling is a technique in which a sterile, single use, very thin needle is inserted into the area of complaint. The needles are solid filament, meaning there is no hole in the middle (as is needed for injections or drawing blood). Because there is no hole it allows the needles to be extremely thin.
Feel free to contact us if you have additional questions about dry needling.
